Barat House Community
The Society of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic religious congregation of
women that founded Digby Stuart College in 1874. Sisters have lived on
this site since 1850 and have welcomed students to Barat House since 1998. Barat
House can currently provide accommodation for up to six students for one or two
years in the community house situated in the grounds of Digby Stuart College at
the University of Roehampton, London.
The community aims to provide a space where students and sisters can
create community together. To this end all residents make a commitment:
- to
create an environment where each one can feel welcomed and at home;
- to
grow in responsibility and awareness of the needs of each person and of
the group;
- to
support each other through the challenges of work and study;
- to
spend time in shared activities such as prayer, meals, and special
celebrations;
- to
welcome differences of culture and mentality and learn to grow in mutual
trust.

"I have lived in several places since I came to England, but Barat
House was and still is very much like my home - safe, warm, cosy home where I
had the chance to meet wonderful people, to experience what living in a
community means, to learn about 'togetherness', kindness, sharing and giving,
being thoughtful and responsible, and so many other things about people and
about myself.""The community feels more like a family and has allowed me to develop life-long friendships. The Sisters are a Blessing to live with and I could not have asked for a better situation! Community prayer nights, trips and meals have helped a great deal in developing stronger bonds within the community."
"To me, living at Barat House is a remarkable experience. I am a
Catholic and living with the sisters in Barat House has strengthened my belief
and taught me important lessons of sharing and accepting. I am proud to be a
resident."
