Annual Lecture 2012: The Links Between a Catholic Childhood and Radical Politics - Clare Short
Tuesday 8 May, 6.30pm in Digby Stuart Chapel
The Annual Digby Stuart College Lecture celebrates the
Catholic identity of Digby Stuart College and its continued links with its
former providing body, the Society of the Sacred Heart. It makes an important
contribution to the rich and stimulating academic life of the University of Roehampton.
Clare Short was MP for Birmingham Ladywood from 1983 to 2010 and Secretary of State for International Development from 1997 to May 2003 when she resigned from the Government over the Iraq war. The following year her book , ‘An Honourable Deception? New Labour, Iraq, and the Misuse of Power’, was published and in 2005 it was awarded the Political Book of the Year by Channel 4. Prior to becoming an MP, Clare worked as a Civil Servant at the Home Office, as a Director of Youthaid and the Unemployment Unit and as a Director of AFFOR, a community-based organisation promoting racial equality in Birmingham. Since standing down from parliament, Clare has remained extremely active. Her current work focuses on the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict, the urbanisation of the poor and the need to prevent the spread of slums of despair, destitute asylum-seekers, human trafficking, humanitarian action in Africa and other issues.
