• Friedrich Froebel

Froebel College was originally founded by a group committed to the radical reform of educational methods. Following the philosophy of Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852), they taught their students that education should be a creative and interactive process, developing the whole personality in all its aspects - social, moral, aesthetic, linguistic, spiritual and scientific and that it should also be fun.

    Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies

    • The Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies is a collection of books, archives, photographs, objects and multi-media materials, centring on Friedrich Froebel’s educational legacy, early years and elementary education. The Archive liaises closely with the School of Education, supporting teaching and learning within and beyond the University.
    • The Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies was established in 1977 at Froebel College where it was located until 2006. Since its formation the Archive has grown considerably, both in its collection of material on Friedrich Froebel, in English and in German, and in its holdings relating to the history of Froebel College.
    • The Archive has close links with Ibstock Place School, the successor of the College’s Demonstration School which was started in 1894, and with the National Froebel Foundation, originally the Froebel Society, whose archives date back to its foundation in 1874. The Archive of the National Froebel Foundation is now stored alongside the Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies at Roehampton.
    • Together these elements reflect the strands which make up the history of the Froebel movement in the U.K. The Archive also has a number of books on kindergartens in other countries.
