TITLE:

Others' Feelings and Own Cooperation

ABSTRACT:

Standard rational choice theory holds that the reactions (verbal or nonverbal) of others to our behavior will not alter our behavior unless those reactions are tied to some tangible outcome. I will present the results of several experiments that challenge this conclusion. They show that expressions of fellow group members' emotional disapproval to one's own uncooperative behavior can deter such behavior, even when such disapproval is independent of those members' own choice behavior.

All welcome!
