• Information for parents

We understand that choosing the right programme of study and university is very important and that as parents of international students, your support in the decision-making process is vital.

We hope you find the following information helpful, but please contact us if you require any further information.

  • Parents
  • Benefits of studying in the UK

Your child will gain much from studying at a British university. International students who have studied in the UK often report the experience increased their:

    • self-confidence
    • intellectual maturity
    • appreciation for their own culture
    • desire to pursue new and challenging educational experiences.

Your child will gain experiences they may not be able to access at home; for example, they will:

    • learn about different cultures while earning a degree
    • improve their foreign language skills
    • find out about new perspectives and ideas about the world
    • improve their ability to communicate across cultural lines
    • improve their career prospects having gained international experience
    • increase their independence and their ability to act responsibly.

Like most parents, you probably have reservations about sending your child overseas; however, remember that it will help your child mature personally and academically. Your child will return home more responsible and independent and better-equipped to face the challenges of employment.

  • Contacting your son or daughter

Staying in touch is easier and more affordable than ever. You have the option of using telephone, email, online video calls, instant messages, text messages and, of course, regular postal mail.

    Tips for staying in contact

    • Before your son or daughter leaves, make sure you have their contact details and email address.
    • Purchase a rechargeable international calling card for discounted telephone calls.
    • If you don’t yet have one, go online and set up a free email account.
    • Encourage your child to buy an international cell phone.
    • Stress the importance of staying in touch! Sometimes students are so involved with their new lifestyle, they forget to keep in regular contact with family and friends at home.
  • Healthcare

We have a Medical Centre on campus with doctors and nurses who can deal with a range of physical and mental concerns.

For further information see the Medical Centre webpage.

  • Accommodation

We understand that you may be concerned about where your son or daughter will live and we guarantee accommodation on campus for all non-UK students who apply before the deadline. Living on campus is a sociable experience that provides a safe and secure environment for students from overseas.

For further information see the accommodation webpages.

  • Orientation

All our students are given introductory talks when they arrive at the University. They receive basic information on a number of issues including personal safety and also how to access the support systems that the University provides. Through its induction programme for international students, Roehampton provides a fun and informative welcome to the University and to life in London.
