• Our international impact

“Roehampton remains committed to diversity and a global outlook as fundamental to an education that meets the needs of a society that is increasingly complex and fast-changing.” - Professor Paul O’Prey, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, September 2011.

As part of its committment to harnessing its academic strengths for the benefit of the wider society, both in the UK and overseas, Roehampton is actively engaged in capacity building projects. Current projects include:

  • International Impact
  • Putting Human Rights at the Heart of Higher Education in the Western Balkans
The Department of Social Sciences has received a grant of 946,842 Euros from the European Tempus Scheme to support the development of fully accredited undergraduate degrees in human rights in the Western Balkans. The project bid, entitled ‘Putting Human Rights at the Heart of Higher Education in the Western Balkans’ was led by Dr Michele Lamb and David Woodman and will last for three years. It involves a consortium of eleven universities from Serbia, Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Montenegro with four EU universities from Germany, Sweden, The Republic of Ireland and the UK. This exciting project combines the Department’s international reputation in human rights education with its growing research expertise in the Balkan region and will provide staff and students from all the participant universities with significant opportunities for knowledge exchange and development. This success adds to the Department’s existing European Tempus project on Service Learning and Civic Engagement in Jordan and Lebanon and establishes the University of Roehampton as a leading partner in Tempus projects in the UK.

Equal Access for All: The Social Dimension for a Stronger European Higher Education Area
The Department of Education is a partner in this new Tempus Project led by Nis University in Serbia.
The project addresses the issue of underrepresentation of certain social groups in HE. It will look to contribute to the development of policy for the HE social dimension and widening of the approach by including underrepresented groups (in particular Roma population and young people living in deprived areas), development of the Student Support services and piloting of effective measures for inclusion of the underrepresented students in the higher education in Serbia.

  • International opportunities for students

Not only do we welcome students from over 130 nationalities to study with us every year, we encourage as many students as possible to study abroad for part of their degree. Be it through short term faculty led summer programmes that form an integrated part of a module or a longer period at one of our academic partners, we recognise the value of studying abroad, not least to develop skills that are highly regarded by future employers, but also for personal and intellectual development.
