Dr Patricia Martínez Zapico is a 2010 graduate from the Roehampton’s MA Audiovisual Translation degree. She is currently a Production Manager at RedBee Media in Seville, helping bring viewers, smart technology and creative thinking together. Recently, she spoke with us about how her life as a Production Manager is helping to bridge the gap between languages and cultures and how her experience at University has helped her achieve her goals.
Patricia has gained favourable ground at RedBee and is currently in in charge of the organisation’s Live Department. Her role helps provide accessibility services (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, audiodescriptions, sign language) for the Spanish national broadcasting company (RTVE) and for a wide range of national and regional television channels (such as Antena 3, laSexta, Canal Sur or ETB in the Basque Country).
“As Production Manager, my duties are related to the daily organization of schedules as to who subtitles what, when and where. Also, I'm in charge of training for new subtitlers joining the company and continuous training for in-house subtitlers. I am mainly focused on quality control, so as to keep our subtitling standards homogenous and so far unbeaten by competitors, quality-wise, in the Spanish market. I also work with other PM both in Seville and London to carry out research and development projects,” she said.
“My reasons for selecting Roehampton came down to the combination of the University’s reputation in the field and its location, that amazing campus on London’s doorstep. Roehampton definitely has the edge in location, resources, and quality teaching staff.”
“The highlight of my time at Roehampton was definitely the degree of intellectual stimuli. I was challenged and eager to learn more- the lectures and seminars were inspiring and you could see the lecturers themselves were passionate about their subject! I was keen widen my knowledge using library resources, so the semi-professional practice at the language lab was a real benefit. Beyond the academic, I love the social side of things as well- my classmates just made the friendliest atmosphere, which was a real plus.”
Patricia also explained that she felt that Roehampton offers the perfect balance for research, study, and an interesting life in the city. “I simply could not be at the position I am now if it weren't for the academic experience at Roehampton.”
