The Centre promotes academic excellence in research into children’s literature, primarily through thriving postgraduate MA and PhD programmes, conferences and staff publications. Tutors also teach at undergraduate level, to ensure the position and prestige of children’s literature within the University of Roehampton.

• run flourishing postgraduate programmes in Children’s Literature, both on-site and by distance learning, which has attracted home and international students of a high calibre since 1993. 
• support doctoral students engaged on a wide range of research projects (PhD supervision). The NCRCL provides a lively environment for postgraduates with conferences, research talks, and a congenial cohort.
• host and co-organise an annual one-day British IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People)/NCRCL MA conference. 
• run a biennial NCRCL Conference, showcasing themes from members' research interests.
• host a series of research talks per year, given by a wide range of experts in the field of children’s literature, which are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Past speakers include Professor Peter Hunt, Professor Maria Nikolajeva, Professor John Stephens, Roni Natov, Francis Spufford, Dr Susan Rowland, Angelica Carpenter, and Professor Perry Nodelman.
• publish in diverse areas of children’s literature, including work on: philosophy and children's literature; adolescent fiction; the translation of children’s literature; multicultural publishing; intercultural exchange through picture books; landscape and children's literature Jungian approaches to children’s literature; religion and children’s literature.
