Postgraduate general entry requirements

Taught higher degrees

You are usually expected to hold a good second-class honours degree (or above) from an approved university or college in the UK, or a recognised degree from abroad. Advice on recognition may be obtained from the Admissions Manager (see above right). Non-graduates with appropriate professional or other qualifications may be accepted on an individual basis by Programme Conveners; details on who to contact can be found in the contact box on the individual programme pages. Applicants who do not meet the usual entry criteria may be admitted as associate students in the first instance. Progression to registration on the full award will then depend on successful completion of one or two courses, as determined by the Programme Convener.

Language requirements and support for international students

Roehampton realises that it is a major undertaking to study and write in English if it is not your first language. If you are thinking about undertaking an MA, MSc, MPhil or PhD, then you will need to prepare your thesis in English and, for MPhil and PhD students, defend your thesis in English. Therefore, before you start, Roehampton tries to make sure that you have the minimum appropriate skills to be able to complete your study successfully.

We initially require evidence of English language ability to at least the following levels:

  • GCSE at grade C
  • GCE O-level at grade C
  • British Council IELTS at band 6.5 overall with no less than 6 in each band of the test (band 7 for research degrees)
  • JMB Test in English
  • Cambridge Proficiency Exam at grade C
  • Cambridge Advanced Exam at grade C
  • TOEFL with a score of at least 600/250 computer based test with no less than 4 in the written test
  • equivalent alternatives will be considered (contact the International Centre for advice)
  • TOEFL IBT score of 100
  • Warwick English Language Test
  • Pearson Test of English.

If you have not quite reached this standard, or feel that you would benefit from a short course in English before you start your degree programme at Roehampton, we can help. Please find which course would be right for you.

On-going English language support is available for all international students from the English Language Unit.
