Deferred entry

If you wish, you can apply through UCAS to enter the programme in September 2009 and take a year out before coming to Roehampton. We welcome students who wish to defer entry, and believe that applicants who decide to broaden their horizons by taking a gap year can benefit by bringing this wider outlook to their studies. You can indicate on your UCAS form that you intend to defer your entry, but if you decide to defer after making your application, then you’ll need to write to our Admissions Office, who will try to arrange this for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I’m eligible to study for a degree at Roehampton?

You need to satisfy two requirements:

  1. You must normally be at least 17 years of age by the time the programme begins (this may be waived in exceptional circumstances). There is no upper age limit.
  2. You must satisfy any additional departmental requirements for entry to your chosen degree programme (see individual subject entries).

What if I have other experience that shows I have the potential to gain a degree?

Applicants are generally expected to meet Roehampton’s minimum entry requirements (see above). However, the University also welcomes applications to most programmes from individuals who can demonstrate the same academic potential as applicants with conventional qualifications. Please note that there are a number of programmes where the entry criteria are not flexible – typically where these are governed by outside bodies.

In order to gain admission, the University requires evidence of significant experience in a field related to the programme to which admission is sought. This experience could have been gained through relevant paid employment, voluntary work or other substantial life experience.

What if I have other UK qualifications?

Other qualifications may satisfy the general entrance requirements, such as a degree awarded by a UK or other approved university or the CNAA, a Teacher Training Certificate, ONC, OND, HNC, HND, Open University course credits, and/or certain professional qualifications. Check with the Enquiries Office if you are unsure.

What if I have overseas qualifications?

Many qualifications will also satisfy the general entrance requirements. These include most European matriculation certificates, as well as qualifications from Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Middle East, North America and Singapore. The Admissions Office can advise on equivalents by reference to British Council guidelines.

What language qualifications do I need if English is not my first language?

If your first language is not English, or the majority of your education has not been in English, you will need to prove a good level of competence in the language. To follow your chosen programme successfully, you will need to be fluent in written and spoken English. These are the qualifications in English regarded as an acceptable minimum level of competence:

  • GCSE grade C
  • Cambridge Proficiency Certificate grade C
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate grade C
  • British Council IELTS at 6.0 in all sections
  • TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer-based, 79-80 Internet-based), including 4.0 in the writing test (academic test)
  • Warwick English Language Test
  • Pearson Test of English.

If you have not reached this standard, or feel that you would benefit from a short course in English before you start your degree programme at Roehampton, we can help you. See information on our English Language Unit webpages about our Pre-sessional English and International Foundation Certificate courses.

If you are taking a TOEFL exam and would like the information to be sent direct to Roehampton University please quote 8598 on your answer sheet and score report request form.

Credit transfer (CATS)

If you have already spent time studying, for example on an HND or a professional qualification or on a degree course, (most probably at a different institute), you may be able to transfer credits to your Roehampton academic record under the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS). If you’ve successfully completed a relevant study programme, you may even be able to enter Level HE2 or HE3. A successful application for credit transfer may, therefore, enable you to complete your degree studies earlier. If you would like further information about credit transfer, please contact the Enquiries Office on 020 8392 3232.

What are APL and APEL?

APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) is an award of credit from a course, self-directed study, or experience either at work or in leisure pursuits (usually termed Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning [APEL]). This award can mean that you fulfil the entry requirements of a programme of study, or you receive a certain number of credits towards your programme of study, or you can enter the programme at a higher level. An example of the latter could be where you enter the course in year two. Each award is based upon individual circumstances and the relevance of the APL to the proposed programme of study. The APL award is particularly relevant to mature students and anyone who has previous HE qualifications. For further details and advice please contact our Enquiries Team.
