Where is Roehampton?

Roehampton University is situated in south-west London, just south of the river Thames.  It is important to note that London is divided into 6 transport zones, with zone 1 being where you will find Big Ben, the Tower of London, the West End and other famous attractions.  Zone 6 is where you will find the airport, Heathrow International.  The University campus is in zone 3.  For directions and to view maps of Roehampton click here

Is Roehampton a good University? 

All Universities in the UK are public institutions and are therefore subject to stringent governmental observation.  This ensures quality across programmes and services.  League tables often vary according to the body conducting the ranking so this should be taken as a consideration.  However, a measure of Roehampton’s excellence might be gained by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which analysed all British Universities and specialist Colleges.  Roehampton performed significantly well with almost 80 per cent of academic staff and teachers at Roehampton now regarded as being of international standing. This confirms Roehampton University’s growing and sustained reputation for excellent quality research and world-class teaching staff.

What kind of courses do you do?

Roehampton University has 4 academic schools.  These are the schools of Arts, Business and Social Sciences, Education and Human and Life Sciences.  In addition to our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, we have excellent research facilities and we have many PhD students studying in our thriving Graduate School. In addition to popular subjects such as Business and Management, The University has a reputation for being a specialist provider of highly focussed programmes.  Many of these programmes are taught only at Roehampton.

How do I apply for a place on one of Roehampton’s programmes? 

Most of our programmes start in September of each academic year, however small number of programmes have two intakes, September and January.  If you wish to start your programme in January, you are advised to check with us whether this is possible.  

If you wish to apply for an Undergraduate programme starting in September, you must apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website.  Once we receive your application through UCAS, the Admission Office will inform you through UCAS of our offer.

What are the entry requirements?    

Roehampton considers various entrance qualifications from around the world.  Each of the International Student Country Pages will give you more information about the qualifications we accept from your country.  If you cannot find your qualification listed, do contact the International Centre at international@roehampton.ac.uk or  + 44 (0) 20 8392 3192.

How much will my programme cost?  Will I be able to get a scholarship?

The tuition fees vary, depending on the programme and whether you are home/EU or overseas student.  Roehampton’s programmes will vary in fee structure depending on which programme you are hoping to study.  Please click on the relevant link below:

The University does indeed offer a wide range of scholarships to overseas fee-paying students on full-time taught undergraduate and postgraduate  programmes.  Scholarships are awarded on academic merit. We are especially interested in students who will play an active role in the Roehampton University community. 

If you are from European Union country and want to study a full-time undergraduate programme, you can apply for the loan to cover annual tuition fees from the UK government.

Will I need to pass an English test to study at Roehampton?

If English is not your first language, you will need to satisfy English language entry requirements.

For most Undergraduate programmes, you will need to have achieved overall IELTS 6.0 with at least 6.0 in the Writing band. Or alternatively, TOEFL 550 PBT, including 4 in the Writing Test, 80 IBT will be accepted.

For most Postgraduate progrommes, you will need to have achieved overall IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any one band.  Or alternatively, TOEFL 600 PBT, including 4 in the Writing Test, 100 IBT.  TOEFL will be accepted.    

However, these may vary according to the programme you wish to study.  It is a good idea to look at the specific Undergraduate and Postgraduate programme pages for any specific language criteria.

If you do not have the minimum entry criteria for English language, you may choose to study on our Pre-sessional English programme.

Do you have accommodation on campus?

The University does indeed have a supply of on-campus accommodation.  Coming to a culture which is different from your own can be challenging and it is important for you to feel secure.  For this reason, we give priority to International students wishing to stay on campus if you apply during or before June of the year your programme is due to commence.  You will be able to apply for Halls of Residence once you have accepted an offer from Roehampton.  If you do not wish to stay on campus you will find the University accommodation Office can help you find somewhere to live off campus too.

What sort of social life can I expect if I studied at Roehampton?

London has any a huge number of restaurants, theatres, sports stadiums, pubs, museums and much more.  How you explore these aspects of London life will be part of your journey as a student.  The Roehampton University Student’s Union is the centre of student activity on our campus.  It has a variety of societies, such as Sports, Music and much more.

Can I work in the UK?

This depends on the type of visa with which you enter the UK.  EU students will be able to work without a visa.  All other students who come into the UK on a Student Visa will be able to work for 20 hours per week in term time and full time during the holidays.  Please do take a look at the ‘Working in the UK’ pages on the International student web pages.  The UK Council for International Student Affairs, UKCISA provides extensive information for International students including information on working in the UK.  

How much will it cost to live in London?

The British Council produces an excellent guide on all matters relating to your preparation before coming to the UK. 

The amount you should budget for living in London over a 9 – month academic year is on average £7,500 (£800 per month)
