Last year, the Covid-19 pandemic devastated families and communities all over the world. Its effects are still with us, disclosing our human frailty and vulnerabilities. However, in light of the many global challenges we face —climate change, racial and gender injustice, and economic disparities that rob individuals of their life chances and life choices — people are still looking out for each other and trying to build just and sustainable communities.
The William J. Seymour Lecture aims to address issues at the intersection of faith and politics, challenging the forces that diminish our shared humanity and prevent human flourishing.
Using the resources of Christianity and other perspectives, the lecture offers hope and encouragement as we work to address contemporary challenges and seek the common good.
This year’s speaker is Dr Lucy Winkett. Lucy is a broadcaster, writer and one of the first generation of women priests in the Church of England. She will explore the vocation to creative resistance at the heart of what it is to be human; and how in contemporary society, this brings liberation for women, men, and everyone in between. There will be a short response to Lucy’s presentation by Dr Rosemarie Mallet, Archdeacon of Croydon.
Previous speakers have included The Most Revd Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury), Dr Michael Curry (Presiding Bishop of the American Episcopal Church), Dr Marijke Hoek, the late Rev Dr Joel Edwards CBE, Dr Carol Tomlin, and Professor Luke Bretherton.
