Family Onychiuridae - Genus Protaphorura Absolon 1901

NOTE: Numerous species within the Protaphorura armata 'group' have been described (simple vesicles in PAO, furca present as vestigial flap). All the 'species' recorded in the literature are listed below. Synonyms are based on the checklist of Kloet & Hincks (1964), Fjellberg (1998) and Pomorski (1998), and Steve's  observations. However, after examining more than 1000 specimens of Protaphorura in the NHML slide collection (including all of Bagnall's surviving material), Steve came to the conclusion that it is impossible to reliably allocate more than three names to these UK/Eire specimens on the basis of characters used by Gisin and others. The pseudocelli formula, presence or absence of seta s' on abd5, and the degree of convergence of lines drawn through the two pairs of setae anterior to the anal spines are too variable. That is not to say that there are not more than three good species of Protaphorura in UK/Eire but that the morphological characters that are currently used to separate them are not 100% reliable. Bring on the molecules!
