We encourage practice-as-research projects, and have a substantial cohort of MPhil and PhD candidates working with us across diverse methodologies. MPhil/PhD students may also work across subject areas within the School. In particular we often co-supervise research degrees with Dance.

MPhil and PhD students have the opportunity to join a dynamic team of specialists, all of whom are active in publishing and presenting innovative and agenda-setting work in the field.

We run a programme of regular research seminars featuring the work of postgraduate students, staff and distinguished visitors to the University such as Philip Auslander, Janelle Reinelt, Rustom Bharucha, Tracy C Davis, Shannon Jackson, Bonnie Marranca and Alfonso Lingis. The Research Students forum provides an opportunity for students to meet informally and exchange ideas, to invite speakers on issues of importance to their work, and to participate in e-forum debate.

The research environment

Research in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies is located in the School of Arts, Digby Stuart College, in five purpose-built studio spaces. Adjacent to our site are Roehampton’s television studios, and the well-stocked Learning Resources Centre. We also host a number of research initiatives within the Centre for Theatre Research in Europe. Within the School there are ample opportunities for interdisciplinary work and exchange with our colleagues in Dance, Film and TV, Art and Music. Beyond the School are researchers working in fields such as Anthropology, Cultural Studies, History, Sociology and Psychology. All postgraduate students are invited to participate in and contribute to the many research seminars and conferences hosted by Roehampton.
