**The Hearth Tax Project is not currently recruiting any volunteers**
The Hearth Tax Project relies heavily upon volunteer staff who dedicate their spare time to furthering the work that it undertakes. Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and get involved for many different reasons but what they all share is an interest in historical research and a desire to make such material more available to the public.
The core of the volunteer work is the transcribing of the original 17th Century hearth tax documents. This particular work requires a knowledge of working with 17th-century script. However, there are other volunteer opportunities within the Project that require different skills. Much of the work undertaken by the Project is underpinned by substantial data management, much of which can be completed remotely and is therefore well suited to volunteer involvement.
Volunteers work from home, at their own pace and are free to shape their work around their other commitments. Transcription work is most often undertaken directly from the microfilm copies of the original documents, and therefore access to a film reader is desirable although not essential. Data management work simply requires access to a personal computer.
In return for the valuable work that they undertake, volunteers receive a complimentary copy of any volume that they work on and a substantial discount on any further copies they may wish to purchase. The Hearth Tax Research Project also host symposia where volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about what happens to their work and also chat with their fellow volunteers over lunch. These days are intended to add an important social element to what is otherwise a largely individual pursuit.
