Diversity and Equal Opportunities

Single Equality Scheme

Staff and Students were involved in the development of the Single Equality Scheme. The findings can be found here:

Roehampton University is committed to promoting diversity and practising equality of opportunity. We are trying to build an institution that is truly inclusive; that understands, appreciates and values the diversity of each individual and incorporates measures that make people feel valued and able to participate and achieve their full potential.

The Single Equality Scheme (SES) includes our Disability Equality Scheme(DES) and the D&EO Action Plan.

The SES describes our statutory duty under the Race Relations Amendment Act (RRAA) 2000 and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005 to assess the impact of all its policies, practices and procedures on students and staff from different groups. To enable the D&EO Committee to fulfil its commitment to the DDA, RRAA and its own D&EO action plan, all staff are required to decide how relevant or what impact their practices or policies have on promoting equality of opportunity.

The Head of School/ Department/Service will have overall responsibility for ensuring that the impact assessments are carried out within the deadlines set down by the working group of the D&EO Committee, chaired by the Pro Vice-Chancellor. QAA, Ofsted and HEFCE will require evidence from schools, departments and services that impact assessment has been carried out. It will also enable the sharing of good practice.

The D&EO Committee set up a working group to initially map and carry out these impact assessments. The SES highlights in the first instance the practices and policies that are to be assessed.

If you have any ideas that can help us live up to our policy, SES and action plan, look on the web site for your representative on the D&EO Committee or just drop Alison a line at

Progress Reports

The University has published its first annual progress report on the Disability Equality Scheme. The purpose of the report is to highlight the progress that has been made to eliminate disability discrimination. Staff, students and other stakeholders are encouraged to contribute further in the continuing development of the scheme.
