Open Spaces. Open Minds.
The University has distinct policies and procedures for dealing with these matters, as set out in the following documents:
A member of staff with a complaint is encouraged to deal with the matter on an informal basis. However, where this is not appropriate, or where informal action has not resolved the problem, the Grievance Procedure should be used. The revised procedure provides for a formal hearing of the complaint, and an appeal process if the complainant remains dissatisfied.
Discriminatory, harassing or bullying behaviour will not be tolerated by the University.
The Harassment Complaints Policy Statement and Procedure is for use by students and staff in all cases of harassment and bullying and is reinforced by the aims in our Diversity & Equal Opportunities Policy.

There is a network of fully trained Harassment Advisers in the University who are there to help you work through the situation, arrive at a realistic assessment of the issues and talk through the options available in confidence.

Harassment is damaging to the recipients of the harassing behaviour and to the University. For the recipient, it can lead to fear, stress and anxiety. It may reduce an individual's capacity to work effectively and damage his or her social life. For the University, harassment may lead to stress related illness, absenteeism, an apparent lack of commitment, poor motivation and performance, and high staff turnover. Reported cases of harassment are damaging to the University's reputation and its ability to attract and retain staff and students.
The University has a duty to provide a safe working environment and will be at risk if incidents of harassment and bullying are not effectively addressed.
The following pages/documents are taken from the composite set of Guidance Notes, which accompany the Harassment Complaints Policy Statement and Procedure.
