Roehampton University
Open Spaces. Open Minds.
The HR Department is responsible for maintaining the University's staff consultative and negotiating machinery:
At the University we recognise the GMB for support staff and for the Academic staff we have UCU, both of whom we meet in a formal Joint Negotiating & Consultative Committee (JNCC).
The staff notice boards will carry information about the meetings of all these groups.
You will also be invited, once a term, to take part in the University Staff Forum, an opportunity for all staff to raise issues and engage in discussion with the Vice-Chancellor and other senior staff on general University issues.
You can also raise concerns or queries as an individual member of staff, or go to your staff representatives, or you can of course contact Human Resources directly if you choose to.
Who are the UCU?
The University and College Union (UCU) is the only officially recognised lecturers’ union at Roehampton and the majority of lecturing staff are members. We have over 200 members.
The branch nowadays generally communicates by email, newsletter and tends not to hold branch meetings unless there is a specific requirement to do so. Casework is done personally, and confidentially, initially by the secretary or chair: if necessary the branch officer will make use of UCU’s Regional office.
What can the UCU do for you?
UCU represents staff and negotiates with senior management through the Joint Negotiation and Consultative Committee (JNCC), which is referred to in conditions of service documentation.
Where the phrase “staff representative” is used in say the University Grievance or Disciplinary procedures, this means the UCU. So the views of membership can be represented at all levels of the University and in the event of difficulties the member can access information, support and advice from a union officer and can have them present at Grievance or Disciplinary hearings.
Locally we are involved with many issues including staff representation on governing bodies and restructuring.
How do I join the UCU?
You can join the UCU and keep up to date with lots of detailed information and news via our website - www.ucu.org.uk/. Current membership fees vary and are dependent on annual earnings.

Please also look at the University website for lots of downloadable material on your job contract conditions and protocols, e.g. grievance, discipline, health and safety.
The GMB is a Trade Union for all members of non-academic staff here at Roehampton University. It is formally recognised by the management. As such we have a voice for collective bargaining with management at the JNCC (joint negotiating consultative committee) where we can negotiate better terms and conditions for our members. The more members we have, the stronger our voice. Additionally, GMB members have the full back-up of the union with legal advice should something go wrong at work. The reps have been trained as a first point of contact.
If you have a work related problem, or would like to join the GMB please contact one of the GMB reps:
