  • Welcome to the Department of Media, Culture and Language

    Roehampton has one of the most diverse student bodies of any UK university  welcoming students from around the world to develop the skills needed for an increasingly competitive and global marketplace. The Department offers academically rigorous courses with a dual focus on research and practice. The quality of our teaching and student support is highly praised (Modern Languages and Linguistics ranked 1st in the country for value added in the Guardian’s University Guide ) and our research placed well in the Research Assessment Exercise.

    You will have an opportunity to participate in the Department’s strong research culture, manifested in its Research Centres and its dynamic MPhil/PhD students. You will also benefit from the real-world experience of our staff, who are undertake high-quality research and are involved in the production of works of national and international standing.

  • Centre for Language Studies

    The Centre is responsible for the provision of language studies throughout the University.  We are committed to the promotion of, and research in, language teaching and learning, offer a range of language services including translation, subtitling and audio description. Our state-of-the-art multimedia Languages Centre provides a technology-enhanced learning environment with open self-access facilities and the equipment for specialised language study. 

    The English Language Unit, provides Foundation courses and a range of courses in academic English for international students. The University recognises the importance of languages as a fundamental graduate skill relevant to the long-term future of the UK economy. We have made it our mission to provide opportunities for language learning to all our students through the Languages for All programme, open to University staff, students and the public. The University also offers students the opportunity to develop their language skills through the Study Abroad scheme.
