New psychotherapy programmes offer real-world experience

Story Posted: 11 July 2008

Roehampton University is launching two innovative programmes that will combine teaching and research, in collaboration with the South West London and St George's NHS Mental Health Trust.

Recent government policy has recognised the increasing need for psychological services and interventions to help people suffering from mental health problems.

Under the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative, the Postgraduate Certificate in Psychotherapeutic Care and the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy High-Intensity Psychotherapeutic Care herald a new form of cooperation with the Trust.

The programmes give Roehampton University students a unique real-world experience by having structured placements within the Trust as part of their programme.

Developed by Professor Del Loewenthal, the project has so far attracted external funding of more than £100,000 for the first year alone.

This follows the success of the recently validated PsychD in Counselling Psychology (BPS) which, on commencing this September, was oversubscribed with all successful applicants having at least 2:1s as well as relevant experience.
