Roehampton student Tom Cotton has received an arts award from the Wellcome Trust to develop his multimedia project ‘Do Not Adjust Your Mind’, which will explore the work of existential psychotherapist R D Laing.

The film-maker and PsychD/MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy student will work with Del Loewenthal, Professor in Psychotherapy and Counselling, and will research Laing’s 1960s experimental communities that sought to offer a radical alternative to the established mental hospital system of the time.

Laing’s experimental communities were in many ways the precursor to current care in the community initiatives for mental health service users.

The Wellcome Trust Arts Award aims to engage the public with scientific issues via artistic discourse and Tom Cotton will present his findings in forms ranging from print to film.
