General programme information

The MA Education Leadership and Management is underpinned by a model of critically reflective practice and is designed to offer professionals the opportunity to engage, actively, in the processes of systematic and analytical enquiry into the theories and practices of education leadership and management, with a view to developing and improving their own practice.

The programme would complement the National College of School Leadership’s development programmes such as Leading from the Middle, Leadership Pathways, the NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Head teachers) and Head for the Future.

NB: The MA is not a qualification to teach in the UK.

Key areas of study

The programme will involve at least three of the four optional modules:

  • The Educational Organization in its Environment
  • Leading and Managing People in Education
  • Change Strategy and Implementation
  • Leading and Managing Teaching and Learning.

In addition there will be modules such as:

  • International Perspectives on Professional Practice in Education (IPPPE)
  • Research Methods and Enquiry in Education (required)
  • Dissertation (for MA students only).

Other modules that may be available for the appropriate candidate include Independent Study, APEL and the Context of Professional Practice. The term Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) describes the process of giving formal recognition to learning that derives from personal experiences gained, for the most part, in employment situations.

Who is the programme aimed at?

The programme has been designed to provide a range of flexible opportunities for practising professionals working in education. It is primarily aimed at all those in leadership, management and administrative roles and those aspiring to such roles across the whole range of educational setting and levels.

TDA funding

Teachers with QTS and who are resident in England are eligible to apply to Roehampton for funding to undertake masters-level study. Funding recently made available by the Training and Development Agency may support up to 60 per cent of the cost of tuition fees for students who commit to 60 credits of masters-level study during an academic year. Participants will then have the option to proceed either to the full MA award or one of the interim awards, such as a Postgraduate Diploma, for which similar funding is available.

Teaching and assessment

The MA Education Leadership and Management programme is delivered through seminars, workshops, tutorials and lectures.

The programme is assessed by assignments which include essays and case studies.
