General programme information

This programme provides opportunities for primary and secondary teachers to explore and analyse the centrality of English in education. The programme aims to cover the teaching and learning of English in all age phases. Modules offered cover a breadth of relevant areas and are assessed in a range of ways. Sessions are taught in a dedicated teaching space that houses a collection of children’s books, academic journals and relevant theoretical reading.

This programme is aimed at:

  • primary teachers with a particular interest in English/literacy
  • literacy coordinators
  • secondary English teachers
  • literacy consultants.

We also welcome teachers of English from abroad.

Key areas of study

Optional modules

MA and PGD students choose four modules (80 credits in total) from the following list:

  • Reading: Politics and Pedagogy*
  • Literacy, Culture and Media
  • Language in Action*
  • Teaching Texts
  • Teaching Phonics: Issues and Debates (not available in 2008/09)*.

*These modules can be followed as self-study modules.

This programme also cross-lists the module Children as Readers with Roehampton’s popular MA Children’s Literature.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)

The free-standing PGCert: Current Issues in Literacy Education is also available to students as a separate award:

Required modules for the MA and PGDip:

  • Research Methodology and Enquiry Part 1
  • Research Methodology and Enquiry Part 2

Students who have an ITE PGCE qualification with 60 M-level credits will only be required to take one module (Research Methodology Part 1).

Compulsory module for the MA:

  • Dissertation

Suggested Dissertation topics:

  • teaching literature through drama
  • cultural influences on literacy learning
  • the teaching and learning of reading
  • gender and literacy
  • EAL and literacy
  • the teaching of poetry
  • developmental spelling.

Sessions are taught in a dedicated teaching space, which houses a collection of children’s books, academic journals and relevant theoretical reading.

The University is home to the award-winning National Centre for Research in Children's Literature.

Roehampton also offers an MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL.

Entry requirements

All applicants should have a good second-class honours degree (or above) in a related subject and must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Attendance and teaching methods

For students studying part-time, attendance will be two hours per module per week (most likely Wednesday evening in 2008/09). Teaching will be seminar-based including tutor and student presentations. Students also have the option of following self-guided study modules.

TDA funding

Teachers with QTS and who are resident in England are eligible to apply to Roehampton for funding to undertake their masters-level study. Funding recently made available by the Training and Development Agency may support up to 60 per cent of the cost of tuition fees for students who commit to 60 credits of masters-level study during an academic year. If you are eligible for this TDA funding, you will need to take 60 credits in one calendar year, choosing from the optional modules and research methods in discussion with your course tutor.
