Centre for Research in Beliefs, Rights and Values in Education (BRaVE)

About us

The Centre for Research in Beliefs, Rights and Values in Education (BRaVE) brings together staff and research students who are interested in exploring philosophical, religious and ethical issues in education. Current research includes projects on: religious identities; community and ethnicity; values, aims and rights in education; internationalization, citizenship education; inclusion and wellbeing. The Centre is directed by Professor Suzy Harris.

The Centre has one of the largest teams of philosophers of education in the UK and is host to the annual summer school of the Philosophy of Education Society Great Britain (PESGB). The Roehampton Branch of PESGB also runs seminars in association with BraVE. The Branch Secretary is Suzy Harris.

BRaVE has 18 members and  5 associate members with active links with the Centre; Professor Richard Pring and Professor Peter Gilroy are Visiting Professors. Members of the Centre are involved in several international networks (such as the International Network of Philosophers of Education and the European Affective Education Network). Members are regular presenters at international conferences including those of the American, British and European Educational Research Associations, the annual conference of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, and the International Sociology of Education Conference. They have been responsible for convening a number of highly successful conferences at Roehampton on human rights, spirituality and the education of the whole person, and most recently, an international conference on Education & Extremism.

Research currently being undertaken in BRaVE relates closely to the degree programmes and continuing professional development provision of the School, and the teaching commitments of Centre members. These include a number of modules in the BA (Education) programme, such as Theories of Education, Schools & Society, Aims of Education and Social Justice in Education, contributions on the philosophy and ethics of educational research in the MA, MPhil/PhD and EdD programmes, and modules on Religious Education in the BA Primary Education and PGCE programmes of initial teacher education.

BRaVE welcomes enquiries from potential visiting scholars and prospective MPhil or PhD students.
