Centre for Educational Research in Equalities, Policy and Pedagogy (CEREPP)

About us

The Centre for Educational Research in Equalities, Policy and Pedagogy (CEREPP) is headed by Professor Becky Francis who ensures that CEREPP is an active, vibrant organisation, that engages the external research field as well as developing internal capacity. The centre has 5 professors, 7 visiting professors, a range of visiting international scholars, and x postgraduate research students.

CEREPP advances research in a wide range of topics in education. These include: i) in/equalities and social justice in education; ii) education policy and professionalism; and iii) curriculum and pedagogy. These research areas are linked through the Centre themes of policy, pedagogy and equalities, and via a shared commitment to critical research analysis informing and challenging existing educational policies and practices. To this end, current research in the Centre includes educational inequalities (with a focus on gender, social class, ‘race’ and ethnicity), pupils’ and teachers’ social identities, violence in schools, and teaching and learning in school and higher education and across a range of curriculum subjects. CEREPP seeks to shape the field of Education via provision of accessible and relevant research that facilitates educationalists to advance educational improvement and social change.

CEREPP attracts substantial external research funding and is currently home to ESRC and EU funded research projects. Members have established research-based links with a range of other institutions, including universities of Cambridge, Queensland, London Metropolitan, the Open University, Glasgow; and the Institute of Education and King’s College. CEREPP members play editorial roles on diverse international journals, and are represented on a range of educational research committees such as BERA and SRHE. Research students from Europe, Canada, Asia and the UK choose to undertake their postgraduate study within the Centre.

CEREPP holds regular events, workshops and seminars that enable staff and students to share and develop their theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills. It also hosts external events and debates aiming to engage research users and shape the academic field. See our programme of events for further details.

The Centre welcomes applications from prospective PhD or MPhil students who should contact Professor Becky Francis. The Centre also welcomes enquiries from potential visiting scholars.
