Centre for Research in History and Theory (CHAT)

About us

Roehampton’s Centre for Research in History and Theory (CHAT) was established in 2006 to build on the University’s international reputation in the fields of historiography and the philosophy of history. CHAT is the only research institute specialising in such areas in the UK and its membership brings together scholars from History, Classical Civilisation, Art History, Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, Dance, and Drama. 

The Centre has held two major conferences on cutting-edge themes in historical theory and has organised the forthcoming conference From Space to Place: the Spatial Dimension in History of Western Europe on 16 and 17 April 2010.

It also supports an annual programme of research seminars, which investigate links between historical theory and practice, and through text- and web-based publications it aims to develop the historiographical field. 

Members of CHAT contribute to Roehampton’s MA in Historical Research and offer PhD supervision across a broad range of historical and theoretical topics. Recent major publications in the field by members of the Centre include:

The Centre aims to enhance Roehampton’s international reputation for excellence and leadership in historiography by promoting interdisciplinary research, publication and postgraduate education in the University.
