Masters and research degrees

We offer an MA and MRes in Early Modern Literature and Culture (1500-1700). Based in the Centre for Research in Renaissance Studies, the MA calls on the expertise of staff from Classical Civilisation, Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, English Literature, History and History of Art to offer a multifaceted approach to the texts, materials, and histories of this dynamic and pivotal historical period.

Research degrees

We have recently awarded two 3 year AHRC-funded doctoral studentships for outstanding candidates in Early Modern and Renaissance studies. The Centre for Research in Renaissance Studies welcomes applications from prospective research students (MPhil and PhD) in the following areas:

  • The social, cultural and political history of Italy, 1200-1500 (Professor Dean)
  •  Renaissance mythography (Dr Kingsley-Smith)
  • Classical and Italian Renaissance art history (Dr Rosemary Barrow)
  • Shakespeare in his own time (Dr Kingsley-Smith, Professor Edwards)
  • Shakespeare in literature, performance and the media (Ms Greenhalgh, Dr Skantze , Dr Taylor)
  •  Editorial theory and practice (Dr McManus, Professor Taylor)
  •  Non-Shakespearean Renaissance drama (Dr McManus, Dr. Skantze)
  • Early modern women's performance (Dr McManus)
  • Renaissance women poets and playwrights (Ms Greenhalgh, Dr McManus)
  • Renaissance cultures of food (Dr Sara Pennell)
