Sport Roehampton

Roehampton and London 2012

The Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2012 promise to be the biggest sporting festival ever experienced in this country. The Games will take place within easy travelling distance of our campus and we are well placed to enjoy the cultural festival that will take place in London.

The announcement of London’s hosting role for the Games was the original catalyst for much of our recent sports development activity and we place a strong emphasis on the Olympic and Paralympic values of respect, excellence, friendship,  courage, inspiration, equality and determination.

Our own University vision aims to challenge, inspire and support students to grow as individuals and to be responsible citizens and leaders in a complex world and the Games provide an exciting context through which this can be realised. Sport Roehampton staff have been actively involved in the work of Podium and Ian Pickup is a member of the Podium Skills London steering group.

Our existing community engagement activity uses sport and dance as a vehicle for engaging local young people and as a conduit for the development of vocational and life skills. Roehampton students regularly work as coaches and mentors with young people and within partnership organisations. This activity will develop further in the run up to and beyond the 2012 Games and our focus is very much on developing a tangible social legacy for our community.

We are equally excited about our ability to support elite sportswomen and sportsmen at Roehampton. Our Sports Performance Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre (SPARC) provides scientific and training support to a number of athletes with their eyes on 2012. Some of these are supported through the TASS programme while others are our own sports scholars. We work closely with a number of National Governing Bodies to develop performance support programmes; we are currently a High Performance Centre for British Fencing and have recently hosted training camps for the British Paralympic Volleyball Team.

The University is also a collaborative partner in the provision of Pre Games Training Camp facilities. Working closely with Go South Go and Wandsworth Borough Council we offer accommodation, sport science support services, recreational and media facilities to rival any other consortium in England.
