Research and teaching interests

My key research and teaching interests lie in the fields of women, feminism and popular culture; Hollywood cinema (classical and post-classical)and genres (particularly film noir, melodrama and romantic comedy); contemporary television drama; crime and the media; Reality TV; and audience studies. I would welcome PhD supervision enquiries on any of these topics. My first monograph, Crime Watching: Investigating Real Crime TV (IB Tauris, 2006) examined the history and popularity of this key strand of contemporary programming. Having been awarded an AHRC Research Leave grant in 2007, more recently I have also published books on Sex and the City and a co-edited collection, Falling in Love Again: Romantic Comedy in Contemporary Cinema. Currently I am working on a monograph about Prime Suspect for the BFI TV Classics series and developing an inter-disciplinary project which examines cultural representations of 'wandering women'. In 2011 I will also be editing a special edition of Celebrity Studies on the theme of ageing and female celebrity.
