About
Erica Stanton is a graduate of Bedford College and of
Sarah Lawrence College, New York where she was the recipient of the
Bessie Schönberg Scholarship and gained a Master of Fine Arts degree. As
a choreographer, she has been creating works for contemporary dancers
for many years, receiving funding from London Arts Board, Southern Arts,
South East Arts and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts.
Erica is a specialist in Limon based technique and has led classes
for professional dancers and taught company classes for Diversions Dance
Company, Phoenix Dance Company (where she was Assistant Artistic
Director) and Adventures in Motion Pictures.
Erica's choreography has been seen throughout the UK. Her work Locus
(1997), a collaboration with dance educator Marion Gough, has been
performed extensively and forms part of a popular resource which is
housed at the National Resource Centre for Dance at the University of
Surrey Guildford. Erica is co-director with Marion Gough of Mothers of
Invention Dance Company. Their inaugural work My Mother, My Daughter, Myself toured very successfully in 2001 and included performances at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells. My Mother, My Daughter, Myself was the subject of articles in both Animated and Dance Theatre Journal.
Erica received a 'Moved' commission from the South East Dance
National Dance Agency in summer 2002 to research and develop a new short
work entitled Matters of Gravitywhich was later performed at
The Place Theatre as part of Resolution 2003. Recent commissions include
work for West Sussex's Creative Space,Undercurrentfor Fabrica Gallery in Brighton and a new work Mass for Mapdance (2007) which toured to Scandinavia and Europe as well as the UK.
In addition to her choreographic pursuits Erica has been mentor to
Kent based dance company Loop, assisting them with their Regional Arts
Lottery Programme funded resource pack for teachers. Erica has
contributed to artistic programmes run by South East Dance National
Dance Agency, including Inside the Artist and Education Action Zone.
Erica has been a member of the Dance staff at Roehampton since 1993
and teaches Limon-based technique and choreography. She is currently an
external examiner for the MA Choreography and Postgraduate Diploma Dance
Studies Programmes at Trinity Laban and the BA Dance programme at the
London Contemporary Dance School.
Research Projects Undertaken
2001 - My Mother, My Daughter, Myself
A 75 minute choreography work for 5 dancers which toured London and the South east.
2002 - Moved Commission from South East Dance National Dance Agency.
A 15 minute choreography which toured the South east and was
re-worked to be performed in Resolution 2003 at The Place Theatre
London.
2004 -On the Edge
A Creative Space commission by West Sussex County Council, this was a
site-specific and theatre based choreographic work for dancers from the
Dance programme at Roehampton, Year 9 students from Chatsmore School
Worthing and a special needs adult performing group.
2004 - Undercurrent
A 20 minute work co-commissioned by South East Dance National Dance
Agency and Fabrica Gallery, Brighton. The work was researched from June
to August 2004 during the summer installation of work by artist Rosie
Leventon at the Fabrica Gallery in Brighton.
2007 Mass - 20 minute work for Mapdance which was constructed for a tour of the UK, Scandinavia and Europe in spring 2007.
