Research Interests

Suzy Harris is Professor of Education in the Department of Education where she is the Director of the Research Centre in Beliefs, Rights and Values in Education (BRaVE). Suzy is the Editor of the International Studies in Sociology of Education and the Secretary of the Roehampton Branch of the Philosophy of Education Society Great Britain. She is also Head of Digby Stuart College, University of Roehampton.

Her research interests are in higher education policy and practice; questions of language and translation in relation to education; and the place of ecumenical thinking in the university. She is also concerned with drawing attention to the importance of religious registers of meaningfulness for how we think and live with each other in and beyond the university. Her current writing draws on leading philosophers of religion such as Newman, MacIntyre, Derrida and Vattimo.

Suzy’s most recent book (2011), The University in Translation: internationalizing higher education, Continuum Press, is concerned with the question of the purpose of the university in a globalized world. This question, she argues, requires a more careful consideration of the language of higher education and how language is used in higher education.

She has close links with academic colleagues in Spain and has published in Spanish academic journals. She is also on the editorial board of Educación XXI, and is a member of the organising committee of the VII Congreso Internacional Filosofía de Educación, 2012. In May 2011 she was Visiting Professor in Universidad de Complutense, Madrid, where she was working with colleagues on aspects of citizenship and internationalisation in higher education in Europe.
