Sylvia Vickers (Honours diploma, (Acting), Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. BA, (1st class), University of Sussex) is a senior Lecturer in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies.
Her teaching and research interests focus on contemporary theatre practice and performance in the UK, with special interest in Comedy, Cultural politics, Directing and the work of Max Stafford-Clark.
Sylvia has worked extensively in the British Theatre as an Actress and Director. She was cofounder and Artistic Director of the fringe theatre company Brighton Actors Workshop (1976 to 1979) and Studio 12, theatre in education company (1980-85).
She is the founder and director of Wired, a performance group based in Brighton.
The representation of sexuality and gender in visual art has been the focus of the work to date. She is also a freelance Director.
Like most tutors, Sylvia teaches seminar and practice based courses; she has particular responsibility for teaching the two courses, Arguments for Comedy and Performing Comedy as well as Approaches to Directing on the BA programme and she will be introducing a further course The Modern Director in 2004. Other teaching includes Practical Approaches to Acting, Processes of Performance , Drama in Performance Renaissance Theatre.

'Leopoldine' (Sandra Freeman) at The Komedia, Brighton, 2002
Currently working with Wired on site specific based piece interrogating gender relations in 1930's Detective Thriller for Brighton Festival 2003
'Claiming Authenticity, Word for Word'. Article considering the ethical practice of Out of Joint and the application of Verbatim Theatre. To be completed 2003
