The Centre brings together scholars working with and across a wide variety of Hispanic texts, including film and television, dictionaries, translation, oral history and autobiography. The research we carry out is strongly interdisciplinary and international, covering much of Spain and its historical nationalities (eg the Basque Country and Catalonia), as well as parts of Latin America (especially Cuba). Our specialist areas include:

  • Spanish cinema
  • Nationalism
  • Transnationalism
  • Postcolonialism
  • Ethnicity and migration
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Cultural memory
  • Film studies
  • Audiovisual translation (dubbing and subtitling)
  • Accessibility to the media
  • New technologies and the teaching of modern languages

The Centre supports research undertaken by staff and students, and promotes research links and collaborative initiatives. Our members are currently involved in a number of international research networks, and are open to further contacts with other researchers and institutions in the UK and abroad, particularly in the Spanish-speaking world. Our activities include  seminars (with papers in both Spanish and English), conferences, study days and colloquia attracting the participation of scholars from all over the world.
