Welcome from the Head of Digby Stuart College
At Digby Stuart, we want you to be happy and open to life. Wherever you are in your own personal story, we want to help you grow and flourish. Each of us is responsible for taking charge of our lives, so in our community there are opportunities to learn the skills to do that - to find out what you want to do, who you want to be, and what you want to make of your life.
Our students and staff are commuters and campus residents, belong to online communities, and meet and share their experiences of learning and living in person. They are first-generation students at university, creatives, and learners. They are care leavers and care givers. They are world-class scholars, researchers, and those coming to the opportunities of education at every stage and age.
Our story as a college began in the nineteenth century, when the religious sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart founded a school here to train women to be teachers. Over time we have evolved into a modern university, using modern research to increase our understanding of the world around us and using modern skills to have a positive impact on it. And still our founding values are with us: a deep respect for intellectual life, a social awareness which impels us to take action, and a belief in the importance of community as the catalyst for personal growth.
We believe that each of us has the potential for growth and we know that an inclusive community supports and sustains us as we grow. We are proud that 59% of our students are the first in their families to go to university and we are proud to celebrate our LGBT+ students and staff. Our research makes us continually aware of the barriers that our BAME students and staff have had to overcome just to be with us, and we are committed to working together so that we see the world not only as it is, but also as it could be.
I know that you will have challenges: the demands of studying, working, living and commuting can sometimes be difficult to balance. But I also know that the community of Digby Stuart has a tradition running back to 1874 which places personal growth and social justice at the centre of what we do, so come and join us online and in person in making a contribution to life.
