School of Education commissioned to evaluate Code Club’s impact

Roehampton’s School of Education has been commissioned to undertake research for a nationwide network of 2,000 after school clubs that teach children computer coding.

The research will explore the impact that the organisation, Code Club, has on children’s computing education in the UK.

Code Club is being supported to carry out its work by the Centre for Social Action's Innovation Fund, a partnership between innovation charity Nesta and the Cabinet Office, which has funded the evaluation work and will provide guidance throughout.

Coding is central to the new national curriculum for computing which, subject leader of Computing Education at Roehampton, Miles Berry, played a role in drafting. Miles says: "Code Club has been at the leading edge of the movement to involve primary pupils in computer programming. This project is an excellent opportunity to study how their approach has helped children learn to code, develop computational thinking and nurture enthusiasm for digital making.”

Also on the research team from Roehampton’s School of Education will be Simon Gallacher and Peter Kemp. The department has been leading the way in computing education and offer continuing professional development throughout the UK.

Founded in 2012 with partners including Samsung, Talk Talk and ARM Holdings, Code Club is a nationwide network of free volunteer-led clubs for children aged nine to eleven. Children are taught how to program by being shown how to make computer games, animations and websites. The clubs are growing in popularity with over 800 schools currently on the waiting list to set up a club.
