Pre-sessional English Courses

The University, in partnership with QA Higher Education have moved all pre-sessional English courses online for summer 2021.

The 5, 10 and 15 week online pre-sessional English courses are designed to help you to get the most from your studies at Roehampton.

The pre-sessional course will help you to:

  • develop your academic English so that you can cope better with university-level study
  • develop your study skills and understand what is expected of you as a student in the UK higher education system

What will I study?

  • Essays: using reading in your writing, organisation, critical and analytical skills
  • Academic vocabulary and grammar development
  • Seminars: presentation and discussion based on your reading
  • Lectures: understanding the argument, note-taking, taking an active role
  • Listening and reading: understanding key ideas in an academic context

How do I apply for the course?

If you have already applied for an undergraduate or postgraduate programme you do not have to complete another application form for the Pre-Sessional English programme. Please simply email our international admissions team and inform us that you wish to be considered for the pre-sessional English programme. Admissions will then assess your eligibility for the programme and issue you with a formal offer.

Applicants from China

In partnership with Oxford International we have launched a blended Pre-sessional English programme. Specifically tailored for students in China, the programme is delivered via a combination of Online and Offline modes. Offline modules are delivered in Beijing.

Course Details

The courses will be overseen and delivered by qualified EFL teachers from the Oxford International UK English Language division, which is accredited by the British Council for the teaching and learning of English. Sessions delivered by the University of Roehampton will include welcome, visa and immigration, and course specific taster sessions. Face-to-face teaching sessions will be delivered by Oxford International lecturers who will help you ‘bridge the gap’ to your academic degree course and provide tailored support depending on your planned academic course. Representatives from the University of Roehampton will also attend the face to face teaching weekends to answer any questions you may have.

Online Teaching

Students will be able to ‘meet and interact’ with their classmates, which provides an invaluable support network when progressing on to their destination course. All students are assigned to a class with a maximum 12 students and dedicated tutor. The class tutor assesses all the students’ work and is available to offer support to students outside the face to face lessons. On enrolment, students receive a welcome pack with their scheme of work, an email address and extensive technical guides on how to take part in their lessons.

Offline Teaching

Student will be able to join our weekend teaching sessions offline in Beijing where our local based EFL teachers will deliver face-face teachings on Group academic presentations, Extended academic writing , Study Skills , Speaking subskills & pronunciation practice as well as bespoken Individual tutorials. The weekend teachings are 12 hours in total and 6 hours per day. Attendances to offline sessions in Beijing are not compulsory and students can choose to join any weekends’ sessions based on their individual schedule.
