Science Week 2015 at Roehampton is set to inspire healthy living

Whitelands College is hosting a week of interactive events, and talks from experts in sports, psychology and nutrition, devoted to different areas of healthy living.

The line-up of thought-provoking talks and discussions will be led by speakers from Imperial College, Hull University, Yakult, Wandsworth Drugs and Alcohol service and experts in our own Psychology and Life Sciences departments. The events are open to current students and staff at Roehampton, as well as members of the public. The hot topics on offer range from how sleep impacts our health, why probiotics is important for our health, and the implications of ‘party drugs’.

Science Week, hosted by the Whitelands College at Roehampton, will be taking place from Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th February, and each event has been tailored specially for different audiences. See below the events you can attend:

  • Monday 23rd February - Why should we take sleep seriously?
    Hosted by Dr Martha Jackowska from the Psychology department

    Find out the relationship between your sleeping pattern and your health, based on evidence collected. (Free lunch will be provided)

  • Tuesday 24th February – Benefits of probiotics in our diets
    Hosted by the Roehampton Student Nutrition Society and led by Yakult’s Senior Science Officer Naomi Johnson.

    Discuss the benefits of probiotics and how products such as Yakults play a role in the health of your gut, preventing obesity and improving your immune system. (Free lunch will be provided)

  • Wednesday 25th February – Techniques to assess the neuromuscular properties of the skeletal muscle
    Hosted by Sports Science and led by Dr Massimiliano Ditroilo from the University of Hull

  • Wednesday 25th February - Open Labs for all students
    The Science Week team will be opening the doors to the sciences labs at Whitelands to allow students of any degree discipline the chance to use the equipment we have on offer.

  • Thursday 26th February - Life Sciences Career Fair
    A number of employers will be on hand to offer advice and information to those considering a career in the area of life sciences. There will also be an opportunity to attend in-depth talks and sessions planning for your career.

    Aimed at: Current Roehampton students from the Life Sciences department

  • Thursday, 26th February - ‘Party Drugs’ Open Discussion
    The Science week team have partnered up with the Drugs and Alcohol Service in Wandsworth to put together a number of small case studies related to ‘legal highs’ currently available within society. Studies will be presented and used to inform an open discussion on the risks, implications and consequences of legal highs with advice and information.

  • Friday 27th February – Lab bench to bedside fertility treatment
    Hosted by Health Sciences and led by Dr Channa Jayasena from the Imperial College London

    Dr Channa Jayasena, from Imperial College London joining us to discuss her research on the subject of ‘Kisspeptin- Bench to Fertility Treatment’.

  • Saturday 28th February - Introduction to University Science
    An afternoon of interactive science sessions aimed at GCSE level students. With a session in the labs, the chance to breakdown food and extract its energy plus interactive quizzes and prizes to be won.

    Time: 1:30pm-4:30pm
    Venue: Whitelands College, Holybourne Avenue, SW15 4JD. Limited parking available onsite for parents.
