This course will allow participants to develop a deep understanding of the key concepts underlying fractions as a result of decades of research in the US and UK. We will explore how to embed these evidence-informed concepts in everyday classrooms with the use of a range of practical activities that will support children’s development of understanding of fractions.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage with a range of different models and strategies that support the teaching of fractions from year 1 to year 6. We will explore the best ways to use models, manipulatives and strategies to foster children’s reasoning and ‘rational number sense’. Additionally, the session will give participants a brief overview of the latest developments and findings in the study of fractions from Cognitive Psychology and Educational Neuroscience and their implications for practice.
