Two new primary school physical education qualifications for primary school teachers developed by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and Sports Leaders UK, and delivered by University of Roehampton Physical Education Lecturers.
Both qualifications have been created to help make the most effective use of the physical education and school sport premium funding. By extending your skills, you will help to ensure a sustainable and high quality primary school physical education for children. Both qualifications are vocational, and are equivalent to a Higher Education Degree Level 5 and 6.
This qualification aims to develop delegate’s subject knowledge and understanding of Primary Physical Education, to be able to assist in raising the standards in teaching and learning of the subject within their school. The course is consists of six Units, Units 1-5 make up Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism. Each Unit will be broken down into Delegate Assessment tasks; these are simply statements that explain what you will have to do in order to pass each Unit.

This qualification will build on the skills acquired in the Level 5 course and will allow you to improve the leadership of the physical education curriculum in your school. Delegates will build upon their ability to plan, lead, review and revise strategies to improve cross school Physical Education teaching and learning. On successful completion of this qualification, delegates will also be able to audit and evaluate the provision of Physical Education within their school and lead on making a sustainable improvement.. You must have successfully completed the Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism before undertaking this qualification. The Level 6 Award in primary Physical Education subject leadership course consist of one Unit, which has been broken down in 12 Delegate Assessment tasks.
Unit 6 for Level 6 Award:
6.Lead sustainable development within primary school Physical Education
This course comprises a total of 38 hours:
Level 5 = You must be working within a primary school setting and already have some experience of delivering Physical Education across all Key Stages. You must have qualified teacher status (QTS) or be a full time teaching assistant/higher level teaching assistant (TA/HLTA).
Level 6 = You must have completed the Level 5 course, and have QTS. You should have evidence to support that you are good to outstanding teacher in Physical Education.

The Level 5 course will cost £1,133* per participant and the Level 6 will cost £1,017*.
*Each course requires a minimum of five participants.
