This course will explore how multiplication and division concepts can be combined to develop a deep and flexible understanding of multiplicative reasoning. We will consider creative approaches to enabling pupils to progress through the use of the array and progressive division strings. Throughout this course we shall consider what it means to understand multiplicative reasoning and the importance of enabling pupils to make connections between multiplication and division.
This course will include opportunities to explore:
- the progression from a filled array to a grid array and finally an open array
- the use of manipulatives and models to support the teaching of multiplicative reasoning
- tasks that encourage pupils to reason and find proof
This 3 hour course will be suitable for Y2-Y6 teachers and the mathematics subject leader.
