Pattern and Algebra
This one day course will explore arithmetic structures, relationships and patterns essential to developing a deep understanding and flexibility with number and early algebra.
We will consider creative approaches to enabling pupils to develop mastery of number through rich tasks and contexts. We will explore models and resources that support the teaching of algebra as well as the role of tasks and questions that encourage pupils to reason and explain. An underlying theme of this course will be consideration of what it means to be mathematical and the importance of enabling pupils to spot patterns and make connections in their learning.
The course will include:
- Using contexts as a starting point for enquiry
- Open questions, low threshold, high ceiling tasks and activities that foster reasoning and proof
- Exploring patterns and finding rules
- Functions, equations and finding unknowns
This course is designed for KS 2 teachers and mathematics subject leaders.
