Dancing Through Crises: Increasing diversity in the UK freelance dance scene under the combined pressures of Brexit and Covid-19

This is a job research project by Professor Alexandra Kolb and Professor Nicole Haitzinger (University of Salzburg).

Objectives:

  • Enhance the evidence base for considering the impact of the UK’s departure from the EU in the context of the ongoing coronavirus crisis on the British dance sector.
  • Inform policies and practice
  • Wider engagement of individuals and institutions from across the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Europe

A number of the highest-profile stakeholders in the field attended the forum (organised in March) or agreed to be interviewed, including Alistair Spalding (Director of Sadler’s Wells), Eddie Nixon (Artistic Director of The Place), Farooq Chaudhry (executive director and co-founder of Akram Khan Company), Hofesh Shechter and Collette Hansford of Hofesh Shechter Company, Sheila Creevey (CEO of Dance Ireland, and a former Roehampton graduate), and representatives of among others the EU, Arts Council and One Dance UK.

This project was awarded a Strategic Priorities Fund. Some of the impact is still in progress.
