The Memory, Reading and Writing group brings together scholars working across literature, publishing and reading studies, providing a hub for research and collaboration. Our aims are to question memory’s effects on reading and rereading; to investigate ways that readers talk about and remember books; to examine memory as a theme in literature; and to ask how texts function as forms of individual memory and cultural memorialisation. We are particularly interested in establishing new methodologies that can be employed to investigate memory, reading and writing.
We currently support three major projects: Memories of Fiction, Prison Reading Groups, and the Memory Network. We host visiting speakers who are leading experts in the field, and provide a vibrant research environment and resources for visiting scholars and research students working on new areas in memory studies. Our members work on a wide range of themes and topics that also inform the department’s research-led teaching: memory and consciousness in contemporary fiction, oral history, autobiographical memory, editing as memory work, and reading practices, including reading groups and rereading. Funded PhD studentships are offered through the TECHNE AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership consortium. This AHRC-funded project has set up an oral history archive of interviews with readers, and is interested in both individual and collective memories of reading fiction.
