Our Research Environment

The Department of Social Sciences at Roehampton University has a longstanding track record in national and international research in the areas on human rights, multiculturalism and migration studies. The Department’s success in maintaining high quality research was evident in the recent research assessment exercise (Research Excellence Framework 2014), where Sociology was rated 6th in the country for impact. The Department enjoys a vibrant research culture with an expanding field of interests in interdisciplinary studies, drawing on sociology, criminology, law, and political and social theory.

In addition to the established areas of human rights, multiculturalism and ethnicity, the Department also has expertise in a wide range of social science research, including: genocide, war and political violence; globalization, citizenship, education and political engagement; sexual and family violence; childhood and modern parenting; psychoanalysis; and criminal justice.

  • All research students are members of the University’s Graduate School, which provides opportunities for peer networking and social integration as well as more formal training, interdisciplinary events, and activities related to impact.
  • All research students are encouraged to become members of a departmental Research Centre, and the Department currently houses the Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research.
  • Research students have staff-level access to University facilities, including, common rooms, IT systems, and individual desk space in designated rooms.
  • The University provides taught courses in Social Research Methods, which is taught jointly by research staff in Social Sciences, Education and Business.
  • There is an annual Research Student Conference that includes work-in-progress and well as more formal papers from research students.
