Before embarking on the three year degree course, you will have an additional year to develop your study skills and strengthen the academic foundations needed for degree-level study.

Sport is a fast growing and dynamic global industry that brings together commercial, social and political interests. There are fantastic opportunities for graduates who have a good understanding of the sports industry to apply their management, leadership and business skills.

Students of this degree course will benefit from Roehampton's partnerships with a range of prestigious sports organisations such as Crystal Palace FC, Fulham FC, The Lawn Tennis Association, Hercules Wimbledon Athletics Club, schools and coaching agencies.

This programme was designed with input from our partners in the professional sports industry. They have given us insight into what really matters in the business of sport, and we have designed a programme that reflects the skills and knowledge required of graduates who go on to become successful in that business.

Through our association with the Roehampton Business School, we will be able to equip you with business, management and marketing skills. You will then further develop and apply these skills in a number of varied and dynamic sport-related contexts. We will give you insight into the complex world of sports marketing, sponsorship and media, and explain their relationship to, for instance, eSports and other emerging markets

As such, the aim of the programme is to produce graduates who:

  1. can demonstrate a theoretical, analytical and practical understanding of the prinicples that underpin the sports management sector
  2. can demonstrate a range of skills in relevant sports-related contexts 
  3. are capable of working in interdisciplinary environments 
  4. are equipped to meet the challenges of the local, regional and national sports management industry 
  5. have developed an academic curiosity and a set of academic skills that encourages further study

Here are some of the possible modules you may take on this course.

Year One

Research and Debates in Sport

Research and debates in sport introduces undergraduate students of sport to a range of academic and critical thinking skills that they will need as they progress through their degree programme. Central to the module is the desire to foster within students the ability to see beyond every day analyses of issues in sport, to a more considered and critically informed perspective that treats sports as a case study to which academic learning is applied.

Sport and Social Issues

This module seeks to equip students with an understanding of the participants in sport, and the various barriers they need to overcome in order to gain access to all of sport's benefits. The module looks at consumers from a number of social angles, and explains how issues such as sexism, racism and elitism affect the sport experiences of individuals and groups. It encourages students to come up with practical solutions to overcome such issues in an effort to better serve the sporting needs of all sports participants.

Business Psychology

This module will help you to develop your understanding of self and is your first stepping stone to the personal and professional development required of all business management students. The module has been designed to enable you to understand the role of Business Psychology in the workplace, and to identify your personal strengths and weaknesses through a process of self-assessment and reflection. You will be able to identify your personal values, assertiveness, develop your understanding of issues such as individual differences and emotional intelligence, and be supported to enhance your interpersonal skills. This process will in turn develop your independent thinking, build your confidence in your own potential, develop your psychological literacy, and increase your drive to achieve your management potential. You will also learn how to appreciate the benefits of team working and understand your preferred role when contributing to teams. This module is an important part of your journey towards becoming a Roehampton Business Graduate. We have designed it so that you can benefit from its content and approach throughout your three years with us at the Business School by understanding your needs as a learner and a future manager.

Introduction to Management

This module employs a problem-based learning approach in which you're prepared to develop the intellectual and personal skills to analysing and problem-solve business challenges. This module is intended to develop your ability to understand the main features of managing an organisation. Through lectures, seminars and workshops, in addition to the supported learning materials and wider reading, you will be introduced to academic concepts enabling them to apply management theory to organisational practice. Through the learning and assessment strategy, you will be encouraged to develop your knowledge and skills in problem-solving and apply this to your role as an aspiring manager.

Principles of Marketing

This module is designed to introduce you to the essential concepts and skills used in modern marketing management. An organisation's customers represent one of its most important assets and marketing is about identifying and satisfying customers' needs and providing appropriate products and services. This module introduces students to the modern marketing environment where digital technologies are increasingly important. The underlying theories behind many key marketing decisions, such as pricing of goods and services, the use of promotional tools such as advertising and digital marketing will be covered.

Organisation and Governance of Sport

Organisation and Governance of Sport is designed to give students an understanding of how sport is run and organised in the UK. It will look in detail at governmental departments and organisations such as the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, UK Sport, and Sport England. In doing so it will investigate how these organisations are involved in the development, management and provision of sport, and investigate their links with voluntary and commercial bodies such as UKCoaching and the English Institute of Sport.

Year Two

Entrepreneurship Opportunity

Entrepreneurialism has traditionally been defined as the process of designing, launching and running a new business, which typically begins as a small business offering a product, process or service for sale or hire. Small businesses are a vital and growing part of the UK economy. This module focuses on what an entrepreneurial opportunity is and how to turn it into a successful business venture. You will learn about different forms of entrepreneurial activity, key stages and elements of new venture creation, entrepreneurial skills and behaviours, opportunity recognition and assessment, value proposition, and success factors.

Leadership and Management in Sport

The themes of ‘leadership’ and ‘management’ are ubiquitous across all walks of life, and are particularly notable in the results-focused domains of sport and business.  The enterprise and associated consumption and growth of sport from an economic perspective, a key driver for this BA programme, has witnessed unprecedented levels of expansion in recent years. This is demonstrated for example, by mega-events such as the Olympics and the football World Cup, to the astronomical TV deals struck between the English Premier League and leading global media organisations. The sheer scale of where and how sport and business meet in modern society, and the employment opportunities this represents for students, underline the importance of the human factors of leadership and management that underpin the delivery and success of any sport. As such this module seeks to introduce students to the fundamental practicalities and pivotal theoretical themes of leadership and management within the context of sport. The module will: address the relationship of leadership and management to workplace performance considering the ‘sports-business metaphor’, explore theoretical approaches to the practices of leadership and management, look at case studies of how performance principles transfer, and furthermore transpose across from sport to business and business back to sport, and finally think critically around topics such as gender, personal skills and authenticity in leadership and management.

Sport and the Law

Sport and the Law offers students the opportunity to investigate the various ways in which the law interacts with the business of sports. The module starts by considering what the law is, and how legal frameworks, laws and precedents affect people lives. It will then move on to consider the specific ways in which sport is impacted. Throughout, the law is presented as part of the environment of sport, and legal issues arise most often in spaces where sports is commercialised and marketed. It will draw on a wide range of examples from areas such as the regulation of transfers in football, the sale of broadcasting rights to TV companies and match-fixing across a range of sports. Finally, it considers those instances where a specific legal framework exists, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Active Health Programme

A major social trend of the last 20 years has been the move from participation in competitive sports towards ‘pure’ fitness activities. Various initiatives driven by government have aimed to tackle issues such as sedentary behaviour and chronic disease. Those who aspire to healthier lifestyles have a tendency to incorporate fitness and general exercise activities into their daily schedules. The most recent industry research suggests that currently over half the adult population of the UK participate in some kind of vigorous physical activity on a weekly basis. The majority of these people, particularly those over the ‘sport-intensive’ ages of 15 to 25, prefer to engage in a general activity that keeps them reasonably fit and healthy, rather than a codified, competitive sport. This has led to a proliferation of privately owned health clubs, an increase in local authority leisure centres, and increased supply of fitness professionals such as personal trainers, aerobics instructors, and yoga teachers. Opportunities to work and be employed within the health and fitness industry have increased accordingly.  

The purpose of this module will be to introduce students to concepts and social themes identified by the Government and health organisations that fall under the umbrella of health, fitness, exercise and physical activity. The module has been purposefully designed and aligned in accordance with Skills Active and industry training providers of health and fitness courses. By completing this module, students will gain an increased awareness and understanding of the key areas that have been identified as relevant to this domain, and an enhanced ability to think critically about them.

Project Management

Organisations have been subjected to an unprecedented pace of change over the last three decades, resulting in a shift in the way they do business and a growth in managing projects at a global level. This has resulted in changes in organisational structure, business processes, roles and responsibilities, new distribution channels, and greater use of IT. In most cases this transformation has been achieved by treating the desired change as a project and therefore a temporary endeavour with clear, bounded timescales, resources and objectives. Hence Project Management is a crucial organisational activity concerned with the planning and management of resources (labour and materials) in such a way that collectively the resources deliver the required project outcome within defined quality, time and cost constraints. This module will enable you to systematically review and evaluate the concepts of project management. You'll assess the role and skill-set required by a project manager, explore the concepts and techniques of project management in a variety of project scenarios and analyse their relationship to personal and organisational issues. 

Community Research Apprenticeship

The module has two core objectives. The first is to prepare students for their Final Year Project at level 6 (year 3). To achieve this, the module will encourage students to consider their key interests and how they might design a project around these interests. In the first part of the module, students will be reminded of a range of research methods that can be deployed in community research projects. Students will gain an understanding of data, and how it might be used to inform decision making. The second part of the module will see all students engaged in a six-week placement or Research Apprenticeship in a sports related setting. Students will be expected to complete a small community based project, or a research apprenticeship with a member of staff at the university. At the end of the placement or research apprenticeship, they will complete a reflective essay.

Sports Events, Stadia and Legacies

This module looks at the role of major events in sports management. For example the London Olympics led to the regeneration of an entire area of London, the creation of a number of state-of-the-art facilities and the development of a nationwide sports strategy. However the management of events and their implications is a complicated field, and there are a growing number of examples where major events have either not been tied into wider sports management strategies, or where the legacy of those events has been mismanaged. What is clear is that the event, the facilities and the aftermath all need to be clearly understood and well managed. This module is designed to give you an understanding of how events, facilities and legacies fit into the sports management structure as a whole.

Media and the Business of Sport

Many aspects of sport are increasingly tied in with a growing media industry. Whether it is simply reporting on sports fixtures, advertising at major events or YouTube streaming of eSports, sport and the media have a symbiotic relationship that is beneficial to both industries. This module is designed to give you an understanding of these relationships. We will look at traditional media sources and at ‘new’ media such as online streaming services, YouTube and social media. We will look at how these tie into marketing, management and development strategies, and how sport's media ‘pull’ may be used by sports managers to better serve sports consumers.

Year Three

Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport

Sport, especially at the highest level, provides considerable commercial opportunities, which are often directly or indirectly tied into performance that is – in essence – unpredictable. Because of increasing commercial interests, there is considerable pressure on managers, players and spectators of sport to find ways to make performance predictable. In fact, the history of sport is rife with instances of bribery, corruption, substance abuse and other behaviour that offends the morality of sport. The module seeks to establish within managers of sport an ethical framework that would allow them to investigate instances where morality is at risk of being compromised.

eSports and Emerging Markets

The module seeks to develop a critical understanding of eSports and emerging new markets for sport. It analyses these phenomena in the context of existing theory around the Sports-Media context, and suggests that to fully understand the way sport is experienced one has to appreciate the influence of online platforms. On that basis, eSport is seen not as separate from more traditional forms of sport, but as a natural extension of a direction in which sport has been moving for some time. The support of eSport through online platforms, streaming and ‘following’ is analysed further through a marketing, media and management framework that allows insight into a complex environment.

Entrepreneurship in Sport

General business concepts and themes will be explored and investigated with the intention that the student could develop their own business idea which is economically viable and sustainable. Central to the module will be the introduction in how to establish self-employed status within the world of sport coaching and/or physical activity. 

Managing Innovation

Innovation is critical for the survival and growth of all organisations. In this module, you are offered an opportunity to explore how various forms of contemporary organisations are able to develop and manage their innovation activities. The module examines what is meant by innovation, why innovation is critical for organisations, and how innovation activities are developed and employed in contemporary organisations as a means of driving and shaping their business. Throughout the module, seminars will involve critical analysis of real-life cases to address a range of innovation problems. In this way, you will develop commercial awareness and recognise drivers for innovation success. You will also have the opportunity to work with others and communicate your views.

The Final Year Project

The Sports Management Project is designed to give students the opportunity to work in small groups to either complete an academic research based project or experience a consultancy or civic-engagement based project.

For those students with a desire to continue their academic studies, the dissertation will connect them to relevant research methods, and ideas around research design, data collection and data analysis. In turn, students wishing to enter the commercial sports environment, the consultancy project/civic engagement project will be an ideal way to investigate real-world settings and apply commercial solutions to contemporary sports issues. In this way, students will not only be able to shape their degree towards a specific area of interest, but will be afforded the opportunity to develop a skill-set that is relevant to their career post graduation.

The module is underpinned by the level 5 (year 2) Community Research Apprenticeship, which prepares student for entry onto the project.

Toward the end of your second year, you will undertake a six week placement where you will gain first hand experience of an organisation within the sports industry.

During this time you will learn how that organisation works and how it's related to other parts of the sports business. We also hope that you will further develop the employability skills that we have integrated into the BA Sports Management. This experience will not only make you a serious candidate for future jobs, but it may also lead to further placements and perhaps areas of further study and research

Extended Professional Placement

This module gives you the option of a professional placement between the second and third years of your degree. Participating in a placement will enable you to further develop your graduate employability skills. It thus complements and builds on the employability skills developed through the curriculum throughout the first two years of your degree. 

This optional placement is 12 months full-time, in a role with graduate level learning opportunities. In the event that a placement lasting 12 months is not secured, or a 12 month placement is cut short for any reason, then the placement must last a minimum of 9 months. The aim of the professional placement is to provide you with an opportunity to develop your experience in managing real life issues in the workplace that:

  1. will enhance your degree subject specialism, and
  2. give you the opportunity to critically review and evaluate the business practices you've experienced in a real business context.

BA Sports Management at the University of Roehampton prepares you for a variety of careers within the sports industry. Our graduates may work with professional sports teams and leagues, or pursue careers in marketing, sponsorship, management and development of sport. They could equally consider management of health, fitness and sport centres. During your time with us, we will equip you with the knowledge and expertise to pursue these careers and more.
