A fresh start

I think it’s safe to say that going back to university at the tender age of 26 isn’t top of everyone’s agenda. I’ve changed my mind on future career paths more times than I care to mention but it’s all been a learning curve for the better.

I chose Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies here in the hope of moving into teaching and three months in I honestly feel like I’ve made the right choice. I’ve been really inspired by my lecturers and would love to work in higher education further down the line.

Like anyone, I was a little nervous about starting in a new university but I'm gradually getting used to using my brain again for creative purposes. It has taken time to get back into taking notes, reading aloud and essay writing but thankfully the first year is all about starting fresh.

Yes I am dressed as a girl;
it was for a lecture on gender.

What I love most about my course is that it makes you think differently about the world around you. For example, one of our classes on, Engaging Performance looks at different forms of performance, one of which is gender. We were asked to come to our lecture dressed as what we would deem as appropriate to the opposite gender, to see what looks we got on the way to the lecture and if it changed the way we acted and our mannerisms while wearing different clothing. I was just a bit cold really!

Starting university as a mature student has been a really positive experience for me. I took the time to figure out what I really wanted and it’s paying off. 3 months down and 2 and a half years to go; I’m sure many things will come my way, but so far Roehampton, we’re off to a great start.
