Preparing to move off campus

As the end of the academic year approaches, it is time to begin your search for new accommodation, that is, if you haven’t already started. If you are a second or third year student, you might be feeling more confident, as you will have by now familiarised yourself with the Roehampton area.

For others of you however this may be a completely new experience, moving out of university campus accommodation, and being responsible for a flat or house for the first time. You may be excited at the opportunity to experience your own privacy and freedom, or you might be feeling daunted by the prospect. I have put together a few tips which I learnt when I was looking for off-campus accommodation, hopefully they will help prepare you:

Hopefully, your new flatmates will be more helpful than
this when it comes to moving

  • Make sure that you pick the right housemates. As soon as you have a few good friends around you, I guarantee that you will feel so much more comfortable and relaxed which will make life easier.
  • Searching for accommodation in a set group is an advantage as you can share the search load and arrange viewings together!
  • I recommend that you take time to really get to know your future flatmates before you commit to living with them! Find out if you have similar interests and personalities. Do your approaches to housework and communal living complement each other? If you guys do get along on this count, that will be a bonus! You can participate in fun activities such as cooking and cleaning together!
  • Independent searchers should consider listing what they do and don’t want. Use this as a guideline to find the ideal room and location which meets your needs. If you are looking alone you can choose to be as selective as you like. However, if you do struggle, the Roehampton accommodation office is able to guide you with off campus searches as well.

Whichever category you are in, there is plenty of help available through the University Accommodation Office - you can call them on 020 8392 4451 or email offcampus@roehampton.ac.uk.

There is also a really handy guide which you can download from the accommodation webpages. Good luck!
