Congratulations on your successful application for the Secondary PGCE course with the University of Roehampton for 2024 - 2025

Ofsted-Good-GP-Colour.png

The secondary-age teacher training programmes have been rated as "Good" by Ofsted for overall effectiveness, quality of education and training, leadership and management. You can read more here.

We are looking forward to working with you from September 2024 as you begin your career in teaching. The course starts on Monday 2nd September and you must be in the country to attend Induction on Wednesday 4th September. If you need to sort out flights, accommodation and visas this must be completed in time for you to start on the 2nd September. The reading, links and tasks provided for you here will help you to get ready to start, whether you're following the university-led, Lead Partner, Apprenticeship, or SCITT route.

We have included some guidance here on finding out how your subject expertise matches what schools teach now. We have also provided ideas for developing your subject knowledge, including reading lists and subject audits. Each subject tutor has provided bespoke reading for their students. The initial reading task prepares you for the kind of thinking that we need across all subjects. We introduce important debates about how children learn and how we should teach to help all pupils meet their potential.

With its 60 master's credits, the PGCE is the foundation for an MA in Education later in your career, should you choose to pursue one.

Roehampton has been providing teacher training for over 185 years. We know how to support you to succeed on the course, gain your first post and to become successful, life-long teachers. Our subject tutor team is at the heart of our approach, and you are welcome to email them. Some of our tutors are also involved in research into teaching and learning, and are leaders in national development in their curriculum subject. Some of the team work as teachers in school as well as PGCE tutors, so you can be confident that their expertise is based on current classroom experience.

We look forward to working with you in September!

September Induction

The 2024 draft edition of the PGCE Secondary Induction booklet is available to download here.

Important note about health and wellbeing

Some of our students will be informing the university's health centre of issues that they may need help with, but the health centre cannot share that information with the PGCE team. Please therefore, if you have any health or wellbeing requirements or additional needs such as dyslexia, let us know as soon as possible because we have excellent resources to support you throughout your time at Roehampton. In the first instance email ruth.seabrook@roehampton.ac.uk who will be happy to help and will liaise with the relevant support teams.

Bursary Queries

A number of PGCE Secondary courses are eligible for a bursary. Information about available bursaries for 2024-2025 can be found here. You do not need to apply for the Bursary if eligible. Once you have fully enrolled, the university applies for you to the DfE and they pay us and then we pay you. The bursary is paid monthly from October.

What to watch

Teachers media is a collection of teaching-related videos on YouTube, covering a range of secondary lessons, so have a look and search for your subject or specific areas of interest like behaviour management. It's an excellent resource for PGCE students in the lead up to their course, and particularly in preparation for your first classroom placements.

Information about your subject specialism

Please find materials here:
