A Memorial Service for Sister Dorothy Bell

8th September, 11.30am | Digby Stuart College Chapel

Sister Dorothy Bell, a Religious of the Society of the Sacred Heart, former Principal of Digby Stuart College passed away on 6 March 2018. Sister Dorothy first came to Roehampton in September 1935 aged 11, this was when the Digby Stuart campus was the Society of the Sacred Heart School. Dorothy excelled as a student and rose to be Head Girl.

Baptised a Catholic at St Joseph’s Church, Roehampton Lane, Dorothy entered the Society of the Sacred Heart Order In 1947. After a period of studying at St Ann’s College Oxford, Dorothy joined Digby Stuart College as Principal elect in 1967 before becoming Principal in 1968. During her time as Principal Dorothy was instrumental in the Foundation of the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education (RIHE). In 1989 Dorothy retired as Principal of Digby Stuart College but never lost her interest in RIHE and subsequently the University of Roehampton.

She will be remembered especially for her significant contribution to Catholic education, and by many who knew her when she was Principal of Digby-Stuart College.

A memorial service will be held in celebration of Sister Dorothy Bell’s life on Sunday 8 September, in the Digby Stuart College Chapel; this would have been her 95th birthday. Details about the service will be published on this webpage in July.
