Commuting to Roehampton 

You don’t need to live on campus to feel part of student life at Roehampton. 

Our campus is located in Southwest London and is quick and easy to get to.

Located between Putney, Wimbledon, Richmond and Barnes, our campus is well connected - so you can balance studying, work and home life without the hassle of a long commute.

Getting to campus

Our campus is easy to reach, with great transport links across London and beyond. 

Our address is Roehampton Lane, London, SWI5 5PU - use this to help you plan your journey to us. 

Our main campus is  a short walk from our nearest mainline station, Barnes, with regular trains from Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Richmond, Hounslow, Twickenham and Weybridge. 

Putney train station is about a 30-minute walk away, or you could get the 430 bus for a quicker journey to campus. 

As a student you can save on travel - get 30% off London travelcards with an 18+ Student Oyster photocard and 1/3 off your train tickets with a 16 – 25 or 26 – 30 railcard. 

The nearest tube station to Roehampton is Putney Bridge (Zone 2) on the District Line. From here you can take the 265 bus to campus, which takes about 20 minutes. 

We’re also close to Hammersmith station, which is on the Piccadilly, District, Hammersmith & City and Circle lines. From here, it's about a 10 minute walk to the 419 bus stop. The 419 stops directly outside our main entrance.

Buses are one of the most affordable ways to get to campus. With Oyster or contactless, you can take multiple bus journeys across London for a daily cap of £5.25. The Hopper fare allows unlimited bus and tram journeys within one hour for a single charge of £1.75 (Oyster or contactless). 

The 265, 419, 493 all stop outside the main entrance to campus. Night buses N72 and N74 also run through the night. 

If you’re travelling to Whitelands, you can use routes 85, 170, and 430. 

If you’re planning to cycle to campus, you’ll find secure bike storage across all our colleges. There are also showers and lockers available so you can freshen up before classes. 

We also offer ebikes on campus, and Roehampton students get 50% off Lime ebike and escooter rides.

We’re one of the only London universities that provides free on-campus parking (subject to availability).

Smart ways to commute

Affordable travel

If you’re using public transport, you could save 30% off London travelcards with an 18+ Student Oyster photocard and 1/3 off your train tickets with a 16 – 25 or 26 – 30 railcard. Depending on when you travel and need to be on campus, you could take advantage of off-peak prices to get even more savings.

Plan your journey

There are some handy apps you can download to help you figure out the quickest and cheapest route to campus.

  • Citymapper – plan your journey with live travel updates 
  • TFL Go – get official tube and bus updates straight from Transport for London
  • Google Maps – Use for checking out walking, cycling and public transport options as well as exploring new areas, locating food spots and shops near campus

Pack smart

If you don’t want to carry too much on your commute, you can use our laptop loan scheme (borrow a laptop for upto four hours), or we have over 200 computers available to use in our library.

Team up

If you’re thinking of driving to campus, why not see if any of your classmates live nearby and want to car share with you? You can split the cost of petrol!

Save on food

If you’re planning to bring in your own meals and snacks, our college kitchens have comfortable seating and fridges to keep your food fresh, and microwaves to warm it up.

What's on campus

Our campus is surrounded by beautiful parkland and with everything in one place, it’s easy to get around. If you’re wondering what you can do in-between classes; there are plenty of places to study, relax or catch up with friends.

Our world-class library is perfect place if you need a quiet space to focus. You’ll find all the resources and software you need, when you need them – plus you can book a private study space. There’s also a cafe if you fancy treating yourself to a drink or bite to eat.

If you find that you need help or advice, Nest, based in the library foyer is the place to go if you need support. If you want to chat about your wellbeing or financial worries, our health and wellbeing team are available for 1:1 appointments. You can also visit our careers team in The Hub and chat about what valuable skills you can add to your CV.

The student view

There are lots of ways to meet and connect with new people at Roehampton if you’re living off campusYou’ll get to know people on your course, through sports and societies, at social events, including commuter-specific ones and during Welcome Week. You might even make friends and build connections on your commute to campus. 

The Roehampton Students’ Union sits at the heart of student life, bringing people together through social events, celebrations, societies and campaigns that focus on the things that matter to students. 

If you enjoy staying active - whether that’s competitively or just to keep fit - you’ll find plenty of clubs and activities to get involved in. From football, basketball and archery to table tennis, there’s something for everyone. We also have a campus gym with two studios, making it easy to fit exercise around your studies. 

Another great way to meet people and earn some money is to be a Student Ambassador. This flexible, paid role fits around your timetable and gives you valuable experience to add to your CV. You could be helping at open days, leading campus tours or supporting university events. 

Around campus, you’ll find social spaces and food spots that are great for meeting up with friends – you can plan a casual meetup as part of your day on campus. And when the weather’s good, our wide green spaces are ideal for picnics, relaxing outdoors or taking a break between lectures. 

Why not use your commute as an opportunity to catch up on your learning? (It’ll make the journey feel quicker too!) You’ll have access to a vast range of online resources, like e-books, journals, and databases directly from our library – it also means you don’t have to carry heavy books when you’re travelling.

There’s plenty of shops and restaurants, just a short walk or bus ride from campus. Some of our top local spots our students love include Putney Embankment to watch a boat race on the river, Richmond Park, the largest Royal Park where you can spot deer and Putney High Street, which is the nearest high-street to campus.
